The Weekend Guitar Trio
played a nice Sunday afternoon concert as a part of the annual Old Town Days celebration in Tallinn. This year it converted the parking lot on Vabaduse Väljak into a tented stage and cafe. Perfect atmosphere for a classy gig.The Weekend Guitar Trio
-- Robert Jürjendal (of Fragile) on an electric acoustic guitar, Tõnis Leemets on guitar, and Mart Soo on guitar and e-bow -- played several songs during their short 45-minute set that would please even Bob Fripp. Though for the most part his former student, Jürjendal, played a smaller role of background, bass, or percussion player on his electric acoustic. Most
of the lead was played by Soo, who did leave the realm of restraint a few times. Some of the passages were extremely dextrous and skilful, bits would even make Fripp think. Most of the songs played were composed with excruciating accuracy and the co-ordination of the three guitarists were amazing. Amazing discipline. Some
of the pieces were strange jams, others were reminiscent of things Frippian. Some Soundscape-like bits, as well as Fripp-style guitar licks a la the Discipline-era. But all of them were highly imaginative and gives this group a unique sound in the world of Frippian guitar groups.Mel Huang
